Fulfillment of the Protoeuongellion
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel,” (Genesis 3:15).
We see man’s first sin depicted by Eve’s eating of the forbidden tree on the right. In response to this sin, the resurrected Christ stands on the left driving a nail through the head of the serpent. This is done to show one: that in His resurrected state, Christ shows that His victory is won. And two: that, as the serpent is nailed to the tree, so it was that the crushing of the serpent’s head was fulfilled when Christ was nailed to the cross. Notice that Adam is nowhere to be found. This is because Christ is named the New Adam and replaces the old. Lastly, Satan is nailed to the very tree from which he tempted Eve to show how Christ turns the plans of Satan on their heads by His passion.
